More Info

The Flagler Youth Orchestra was started in 2005 under the direction of Jonathan May and Cheryl Tristam as a free after-school strings program. The primary supporter of the program is the Flagler County School District. Over the years, this program has grown from a couple dozen students to a membership of more than 375 each year.

The FYO is serving the unique needs of our community by providing fundamental instruction on violin, viola, cello and bass, orchestral performance opportunities at all skill levels, and instrument scholarships for those in need. All that before mentioning the inclusive, encouraging, and safe learning environment our staff and volunteers provide.

To achieve this, we need to compensate our staff, purchase instruments to make available to students who need help (and repairs), purchase music for our library (including supplies to make those copies), and classroom materials. In addition to these basic necessities, we celebrate each of our three concert successes with beautifully  and professionally produced printed programs and a post-performance reception. The FYO rewards our graduating seniors with monetary scholarships at the end of the year.

Goals for the 2020-21 season:

$17,000 instructional costs

$3,000 new instrument scholarships

$800 new music

$2,000 senior scholarships

$500 office supplies (paper, toner, etc.)

$2,000 instrument repairs (includes replacing bows, cases, chin rests, etc., in addition to luthier costs)

$300 Reception refreshments
